Carers Week 2025 (9th–15th June) is a time to highlight the incredible contributions of unpaid carers across the UK, and here in North East Lincolnshire, we have every reason to celebrate the dedication, resilience, and compassion of those who provide vital care to loved ones.

This year’s theme is ‘Caring About Equality’. It highlights the inequalities faced by unpaid carers, including financial hardship, social isolation, and the impact on mental and physical health. Too often, carers sacrifice opportunities in education, employment, and personal growth due to their caring responsibilities.

Carers Week is a crucial opportunity to raise awareness and advocate for better support systems that ensure carers are recognised, valued, and empowered.

What support is available for carers of adults in North East Lincolnshire?

Carers Assessments

All carers have the right to request an assessment of their needs, known as a ‘Carers Assessment.’ This is separate from any assessment the person you care for may receive. The term ‘assessment’ can sound scary, but it is just a conversation.

If eligible needs are identified, a support plan will be put in place to help you in your caring role. You can request a Carers Assessment regardless of whether the person you care for is receiving an assessment themselves.

The support available depends on individual circumstances, but an assessment can explore:

  • Access to local support groups
  • Assistance with your caring responsibilities
  • Options for taking a break from your caring role
  • Contingency planning for unexpected situations

If you would like to discuss your caring role or request a Carers Assessment, you can contact Focus Adult Social Work on 01472 256256 (Option 2).

The Social Care Handbook can give you more information and advice on the process of an assessment and the eligibility criteria.

They provide regular contact with carers. This can be through face-to-face visits in their homes, in the community, telephone or by email. Contacts can be weekly, monthly or whatever the carer feels they need at any stage in their journey. The contact and support also continue when their cared-for moves to supported housing or into permanent care.

They provide emotional and practical support. For example, support with attending meetings, completing paperwork, and signposting them to other organisations that provide further help.
