Focus Independent Adult Social Work commemorated World Social Work Day by hosting an event that celebrated North East Lincolnshire’s history, heritage and community.
We enjoyed a talk from a local historian, Emma Lingard, that focused on the fishing heritage of the region and the social and economic effects that it had on its residents. We heard from our local voluntary partners, The Fishermen’s Mission and Mariner’s Trust on the valuable work they do to support the community and, North East Lincolnshire’s Principal Social Worker, John Allen, took the opportunity to provide important local updates and remind all of us that people are at the heart of adult social care.
We were also supported by The Care Plus Group, The British Red Cross, The Alzheimer’s Society, Friendship at Home, the Carers’ Support Service and Quest who held stands and gave helpful information to the social work professionals in attendance about the work they do. This gave us a great opportunity to explore more ways that we can work with our fellow professionals to support our service users to achieve strength based outcomes.
One of the highlights of the event was hearing the first-hand experience of a local carer, Gina Ablett, who is currently being supported by Focus. She gave us insights into her caring role, and was able to talk about how receiving the right support from Focus has enabled her to continue to provide care for her loved ones and find creative ways to thrive.
We then closed our event with a wonderful performance from The Friendship at Home Memory Lane Choir who showed us all the positive effects music can have on people living with dementia.
We were thrilled with the positive feedback we received from all who attended and we can’t wait to do it all again next year.
